The serial number is a unique 16 digit number used for license identification that includes the year ID (currently 2021), version of the software, and can be a single-user or network license.
The serial number is required when you are switching from the trial version to a purchased or non-profit license, or if you want to reactivate the software (for example, after formatting the disk and reinstalling the software or moving it to a new device).
The serial number belongs to the program version of a given year, so for another year's version, a different serial number must be used.
A single-user license allows you to run the program on one machine at a time.
